LESBIANS ARE HUMAN TOO
| by Masicar | Wednesday, October 7th |
It is very sad at the way things are turning out to be in this very society that applaudes human rights. The incident back in Siaya should act as an eyeopener to all the animosities that are taking place. I write with so much bitterness and call for all the human rights defenders, activists, and all LGBTI organisations to put up a fight against all these barbaric behaviors. Violence against lesbians is a global problem that needs serious interventions.
I am not leaving behind the feminists in this call because many attimes they tend to focus on patriachy because a singular focus on gender overlooks intersections of multiple layers of identity such as race, class, sexuality or even ability status. If these are not given recognition, certain groups may not be deemed "legitimate" victims and maybe denied adequate protection from violence. As a result of this criticism, feminist theorising should shift towards an acknowledgement of the multiple sites of power and oppression that affect the lives of women..lesbians included.
I would like to thank Minority Women In Action for the approach that they are taking in seeking justice and by taking a post structuralist approach to individuals stories such as this, which allows for a dynamic perspective aimed at assessing the actor's own meanings and understandings of their experiences of violence, victimisation and perpertuation. It is through such documentations that we can have a strategic impact litigation ie a case that brings transformation across the board.
