How does you child go and return home from school? Parents have resulted in different means of ensuring children reach to school safely and in good time. Some parents have their nannies walk their children to school, while others will drive their children. Others opt to use the school bus while in other parts of our country a boda boda (public transport by use of bicycle) person will be assigned to transport the children. Whichever method a parent settels on is influenced by a number of factors which include how much money one will spend, the distance from your house to the school, the time the child needs to be in school and many other factors. But whatever method a parent chooses it is all in good faith that it is the safest mode for her child.

This week i noted with concern the way our children are handled in the hands of a school bus. It was interesting and also shocking when i paid keen attention to what the school bus driver had tuned into. In one of the school bus, the pre-school children were listening to Classic 105. For those who are Kenyan, we know what talk goes on every morning on Classic 105, sex talk. The target audience for Classic 105 are not school children. So naturally when i reached the office i called the school and aired my concern to their transport manager who promised to rectify matters. Today morning i passed the bus again and same thing, Classic 105 only that the volumn was low.

It got me thinking and i started asking around, if you have a child or a niece or nephew who rides in the school bus, do you know what they listen to? Majority of the ladies who i talked to openly said they have no idea what their children listen to when riding in the school bus. And for my friends who have children in that particular school, i called them and asked them to call the school and talk to the relevant authority.

It is our responsiblity as adults to ensure our children and our neighbors children are safe. In our current society, we cannot afford to be ignorant of what is happening around us. I do not have a child in that school but i cannot seat back and let other people's children listen to such adult conversation every morning. What value will it add to those little minds? Have a vigilant weekend!
