WHO SHOULD BE IN THE KITCHEN?

In the modern society, both women and men are professionals. So who should be in the kitchen?

I am of the belief that anyone who gets home first needs to cook and clean. And if 2 people living together get home at the same time, both should cook.

On Saturday (26^th February 2011) I attended a wedding and listened to an aunt of the bride tell the groom, “Our daughter has been well brought up. She can cook and clean very well”. Then she went ahead to explain to her on how she should make the bed, not put washed clothes on the bed as the husband will need a place to rest when he comes home from work. Just when I thought I had heard enough of it, she gave cooking pots and cooking sticks to the bride and said, “Now that the bed is well made, you need to make for your husband good food. So he can eat well and rest”.

It got me thinking, “What about the bride, doesn’t she also deserve to be cooked for, eat very well and rest?”

As women in Kenya today, what role are we playing to make sure that stereotypes on the woman’s place being in the kitchen end? As sisters, mothers, aunts, friends let’s encourage women to take lead roles. Every human being irrespective of their gender wants a good stay in this world.
