Househelps and NHIF

In June this year, guidelines governing employment of domestic workers were published by the Minister of Labour following the passage of new rules by the International Labour Organization, of which Kenya is a member. Somehow Kenya settled on 7k as the minimum wage for domestic workers (not sure how this was reached). This went to raise a lot of dust as many people felt that 7K would be too much to pay a house help. And many of the arguments were legitimate as the domestic workers who work for us live in our houses and eat our food.

So I am back to the office after a fulfilling experience in Malindi. I had received several calls from some of my friends who sometimes consider me their " Love doctor"....I often wonder why because I too am looking for answers to some of the very questions they ask!!! Its always about this thing called love, courtship, relationships and how to keep it going.....

Polygamy: Present or Past

It is now often said that Polygamy is somewhat something of the past. I have heard many say " I cannot let my self be married as a second wife and if my hubby marries another woman I will leave him!" Long ago marriage to a second third and even forth wife was not that big of a deal. Today as I see it polygamous families are faced with law suites, public humiliation, dis-ownment but to mention a few of the common family fueds. Despite all this we still find many young women cohabiting with or married as second and third wives where they have no power and no freedom of their own.

Shuga: HIV/AIDS Among the Youth in Kenya

I watched Shuga last year and it blew me away! I had never watched a TV program that spoke to me the way Shuga did. Each of the characters I could resonate with. I knew friends like them and I was some of the characters on the show. For those who may not have gotten the opportunity to see the show it spoke about a group of young friends , their night life, their search for employment, their freedom, their relationships and the choices they made. It brought out issues around HIV/AIDS and some of the situations that young people in Nairobi so often find themselves in.

13/05/2011

12 May 2011. AWID stands in solidarity with the Ugandan LGBT community and all those who continue to fight against the Anti-Homosexuality Bill and we urge the government of Uganda to take positive action in rejecting the Bill and upholding human rights for all.
