Young Mothers Initiative
The young mother's initiative was started with an aim to open safe spaces for young mothers from formal and informal low income areas. The project was innovated by Nicole Khanali during the 2006/07 Internship period and later on implemented by YWLI for a period of 2 years. It was offered the young mothers a space to get information on various issues affecting their lives.
Binti Initiative
Binti is a Kiswahili word for "daughter". The Binti project was innovated by Esther Wambui in the 2007 internship period & has been incorporated into YWLI programs. The aim of Binti is using football as an avenue to reach out to adolescent girls in and out of school to give them an opportunity to come together to build their capacity and realize their full potential as young women leaders in their community. Binti was started to allow the girls to share some of the challenges they face as girls living in Kawangware, a low income settlement in Nairobi.
Kawangware Pop Stars
Kawangware Pop Stars was a project initiated by Lillian Kariuki in the 2008/09 internship period. The initiative aimed at encouraging youth to use their talents to vouch for human rights and fight all forms of discrimination against women. It gave the participants an opportunity to learn more about human rights and the various manifestations of violence against women. It offered the young men and women a space to discuss the roles that both men and women play in the fight against violence and offer their opinion on the insecurity and lack of support in the areas they come from.
The youth were able to come up with various poems, songs, acrobatics and skits to help express themselves and bring out the various manifestations of violence and some of the ways in which as youth they can curb them. The project held successful competitions in Kawangware where many teams and individuals participated. The competitions brought together members of the community and provoked various reactions towards violence against women and importance of women in the community.
