Biography

Nyakato is a proud mother, feminist and accountant – who was born and bred in beautiful Nairobi. Since 1998, Nyakato became more interested and enlightened on women’s human rights when she joined COVAW (women’s human rights NGO). Being invited to join YWLI in 2003 made her specifically passionate about young women’s rights as well. Nyakato also serves in the Board of The Cradle, the children’s foundation – a child rights organization based in Kenya. As a feminist Nyakato has learnt the all important lesson of taking care of herself first, and so as a personal commitment to self, she spoils herself at least once a year:)! She strongly believes that once the self is covered then it’s easier to be receptive to new ideas and to help/ assist/guide/mentor other women/men/children…Nyakato loves to travel and experience different cultures – she is fortunate that in her current job at Cordaid, she gets to travel all over Kenya’s arid and semi arid areas – and is inspired daily by the brave women, who not only have to brave and deal with deep rooted male biases but also the perennial drought to ensure the best for themselves and for those around them.
