- Biography
Violet Barasa is a women rights researcher and activist, with over five years experience working on gender programs with various organizations including student groups, Kenya Human Rights Commission, Civicus World Alliance and Duke Women Empowerment center in US. She holds a bachelors degree in social sciences from Egerton University and numerous certificate courses in Women Studies.
Violet’s keen interest and passion for girl child education has involved her in producing documentaries featuring rampant inequalities amongst girls attending school especially in cultures not keen on educating girls. This has continued to create awareness and invoke interest in improved girl child education. The documentaries have also helped fundraise to educate bright but needy girls from marginalized communities across Kenya.
Violet is currently working as a gender policy researcher with the Africa Policy Research Institute, a policy think-tank which uses empirical research to influence public policy. She has much recently been involved in research on women access to property such as land and other assets within the context of culture in Kenya. She has been doing research in Mt. Elgon where inequalities between men and women are still rife. Violet has recently won the prestigious Master in Women and Gender Studies scholarship offered by the European Union, in honor of accomplished young women with impressive records in women rights activism and work. She proceeds to the University of Hull (UK) and Utrecht (the Netherlands) in Sept 2009 for double master degrees respectively.
